What a Valid VAT Invoice Must Include
A VAT (or tax) invoice is a legal document, and tax authorities require specific information on it. The exact fields vary slightly by country, but the core requirements are similar across the UK and the Gulf. Use the lists below as a checklist before sending any invoice.
UK VAT Invoice (HMRC)
A full UK VAT invoice must contain:
- A unique, sequential invoice number
- Your business name, address, and VAT registration number
- The invoice date (and the “time of supply” / tax point if different)
- The customer’s name and address
- A clear description of the goods or services supplied
- For each line: quantity, unit price excluding VAT, VAT rate, and the net amount
- The total amount excluding VAT
- The total VAT charged, shown in sterling
- The rate of any cash discount offered
UAE Tax Invoice (FTA)
A valid UAE tax invoice should display:
- The words “Tax Invoice” clearly shown
- The supplier’s name, address, and Tax Registration Number (TRN)
- The recipient’s name, address, and TRN (if they are VAT-registered)
- A sequential invoice number and the date of issue
- A description of the goods or services
- Unit price, quantity, VAT rate, and amount payable — shown in AED
- The total amount payable and the VAT amount, both in AED
- Details of any discount applied
Saudi Arabia (KSA) Tax Invoice (ZATCA)
A KSA tax invoice must include:
- The seller’s name, address, and VAT registration number
- The buyer’s name and address (and VAT number for B2B)
- A sequential invoice number, issue date, and supply date
- A description of goods or services with quantity and unit price
- The taxable amount, VAT rate, and VAT amount per line
- The total excluding VAT, the total VAT, and the total including VAT
Qatar
Qatar has not yet implemented VAT. As of 2026 there is no VAT charged on goods and services in Qatar, though a 5% standard rate is widely expected under the GCC VAT Framework Agreement. Until VAT is formally in force, invoices in Qatar do not include VAT. You can still use this tool to create professional invoices, and switch to the Qatar preset (0%) or a custom rate once VAT is introduced.
