Plus VAT Table: Add 20% VAT to £50 to £10,000

Updated 27 October 2026 · 2 min read

Quick answer: “+ VAT” means VAT has not been included yet. To get the total, multiply by 1.2 (20% VAT). £450 + VAT = £450 × 1.2 = £540, of which £90 is VAT.

Plus VAT table: how to add 20% VAT to a UK price

What does “plus VAT” mean?

A price quoted as “£1,000 + VAT”, “£1,000 plus VAT” or “£1,000 ex VAT” is the net price. VAT is added on top at checkout or on the invoice. At the UK standard rate of 20% you pay the net price plus one fifth of it. A few goods and services use the 5% reduced rate, and some are zero-rated. See UK VAT rates explained.

Formula to add 20% VAT

  • VAT = net price × 0.2
  • Total = net price × 1.2
  • Example: £280 × 0.2 = £56 VAT, so the total is £336

Going the other way

If a price already includes VAT, divide by 1.2 instead. £540 inc VAT ÷ 1.2 = £450. Read how to remove VAT from a price and VAT inclusive vs exclusive, or check the shorter VAT table on the UK calculator page.
